Taoist Tianpeng Ruler
I. Appearance and Features
1. Use of the Instrument
To ward off evil spirits: Hit the ground or the void during the ritual to dispel the evil spirits
To measure the realm: The scale on the ruler symbolizes “measuring yin and yang” and defines the sacred space (such as drawing boundaries in rituals)
To summon generals and perform rituals: Used in conjunction with the Tianpeng Mantra to dispatch divine soldiers and heavenly generals
2. Shape and structure characteristics
Physical structure:
Common materials: lightning-struck jujube wood (most masculine) or ebony
Standard size: 1 foot 2 inches (36cm, corresponding to the number of 36 Tiangang )
Surface inscription: engraved with Big Dipper, 28 Mansions or the holy name of Tianpeng Marshal
Symbol system:
Four-sided shape: represents the stability of the four directions (different from the plane of ordinary ruler)
Scale mystery: not evenly divided, key nodes correspond to the direction of earthly branches
Top carving: mostly made of Xiezhi (mythical beast) or trident shape
II. Analysis of the deep meaning of Taoist Tianpeng ruler
The Tianpeng ruler is not only a tool, but also a concentrated carrier of Taoist cosmology, practice philosophy and power symbols. Its meaning can be divided into three dimensions:
1. “Rules break evil” – the embodiment of the laws of heaven
Physical scale → cosmic law:
The scale is not a simple measurement, but corresponds to the twenty-eight constellations and the twenty-four solar terms, symbolizing the authority of “measuring the three realms”
The four-sided shape represents the “place” in “the sky is round and the earth is square” (the earth law is stable), which complements the compass (the circle is like the sky)
The metaphor of the striking action
The ruler breaks through the air like a thunder god will punish, which is in line with the concept of “thunder law mediates yin and yang”
During the ceremony, the number is related to the Dandao Zhoutian by knocking three times (for the Three Pure Ones), nine times (for the Nine Heavens), etc.
2. “Symbol of power” – the violent defender of the order of the gods
Tian Peng Marshal’s “Shang Fang Sword”
The leader of the Four Saints of the North Pole is in charge of the Heavenly Prison, and the ruler is the incarnation of “torture instrument”, reflecting the spirit of “killing to stop killing”
Ebony/lightning-struck wood material strengthens the “yin energy punisher” attribute (different from the pure yang exorcism of the peach wood sword)
Military symbols in the scale code:
Some ancient rulers are engraved with “imperial edicts” or military symbols, reflecting their functions of dispatching the thirty-six Tiangang generals
Compared with the copper coin sword: the copper coin sword is mainly for “wealth breaking evil”, and the Tian Peng ruler is mainly for “power suppressing evil”
3. “Internal cultivation and external manifestation” – Taoist body and mind tempering device
External magic weapon → Internal precepts:
Holding a ruler is like holding a precept, warning practitioners that “the mind must conform to the standard of heaven”
The Dao Fa Hui Yuan states that when wielding a ruler, one must silently recite “the mind is as straight as a ruler, and the mind is as strong as a sharp sword”
Secret meaning of Dan Dao:
The length of a ruler of 1 foot 2 inches corresponds to the 12 meridians of the human body, and the ritual movements simulate the movement of true qi
The texture of jujube wood symbolizes “fire” (lightning-struck wood also means “forging the body with heavenly fire”)
